The focus of this year’s Willowridge Wanakafest is the Stonewood Homes House Build Project!
Project Background
The seeds for this project all started many months ago… Wanakafest needed something BIG to get it back on its feet again. We approached John Herbert and Mark Harry at Stonewood Homes and they immediately stepped up to the plate offering to build a house at cost for the festival. We then needed the means to sell the house and Phil Gilchrist at Harcourts Wanaka offered to sell the house with no commission. Then we needed a place to build it and in stepped Allan Dippie from Willowridge Developments. He offered us a section at West Meadows at a reduced selling price. WIth these three key elements in place, the project started rolling in the right direction.
Project Aim
We have much higher intents that just building this house… Our aim is to use this project to bring the community together and with the proceeds raised from this project we will use some of it towards keeping our community festival and some of it towards building a community asset s during next year’s Wanakafest.
We are trying to build the house for as little cost as possible so that we are able to build something really great for Wanaka!
We aim to have this house finished in time for the festival and will auction it off on the last day of the festival. This house will have no reserve! and will be a great deal for the lucky new owners! We are working hard to get as many added touches as possible to make it a really great buy for the lucky people who end up with this fantastic house!
Community Project
Our major motivation for this project is the ability to give back to the community. By building a community asset, people will know that if they support Wanakafest, they support the community. Proceeds from the sale of the house will go towards keeping our community festival and building a community asset during 2010 Wanakafest.
We want your input! So far some great ideas have been put forward for ideas for the Community Asset. Some ideas are to add a water feature park on to the dinosaur park, another idea is for a covered music area on the lake front, another is to try and build a youth centre for Kahu Youth and other community groups! If you have a great idea, please send it to us at info@wanakafest.co.nz! We really want to know what does Wanaka want?
Recognition for years to come
A part of bringing the community together involves acknowledging those who help out. We will include all the names of those who helped out with the house build on a plaque on whatever we build. Those who contributed to the house build can then take their children and grand children there and show them that they helped bring that “asset” to the town.
How can I be involved?
We are calling all trade suppliers, house wares suppliers and willing volunteers to help make this project a success! From making cups of tea, bringing us Pie-day Friday and planting plants to jibbing the walls and supplying building materials, every bit helps and brings us one step closer to making it happen.
